Bot Auto cut the cost of its autonomous driving system to $50,000 per truck, according to a FreightWaves report published Oct. 20, 2026. President and COO Brett Suma said the company achieved the lower cost by pairing advanced AI-first software with Lenovo’s AD1 compute unit and NVIDIA Hyperion hardware, compared with what Suma described as an industry norm of roughly $150,000. Bot Auto, founded in 2023, built its stack around AI from the outset rather than adapting earlier robotics-era systems, according to the report.

Suma said the lower hardware cost stems primarily from the company’s software foundation. The Lenovo AD1 is rated for -40 to 85 degrees Celsius and built to Class 8 shock and vibration standards, reducing thermal management demands compared with prior-generation systems, according to the report. On safety, Suma said Bot Auto runs 100 million miles of simulation per day and uses redundant steering, with a secondary system taking over if the primary fails and an emergency pullover capability if that fails.

Bot Auto completed what it described as America’s first fully humanless commercial load in April, moved about 350 loads per month and grew revenue 270% between May and August, according to figures cited in the report. Bot Auto planned to begin upfitting trucks with the Gen 2 stack in the first quarter of 2027, a timeline Suma said was held until the compute platform could scale without forcing the company to raise dilutive capital. Suma also said Bot Auto had contracted a nationwide upfitter capable of handling a significant number of tractors per month once Gen 2 deployment begins.

For sourcing professionals, Suma’s statement that Bot Auto would not raise capital to buy depreciating assets such as Class A trucks makes the disclosed $50,000 system cost relevant to how the company plans to fund fleet assets.
