The Columbia River Bar Pilots were established in 1846 to ensure the safety of ships, crews and cargoes crossing the Columbia River Bar, recognized as one of the most dangerous and challenging navigated stretches of water in the world. They provide pilotage for the Columbia River entrance, from the open sea to a position just east of Astoria, Oregon, and are one of the oldest ongoing businesses in Oregon.
